How to add an external USB hard drive to your PC or Laptop:

This is done one of two ways depending on the type of external USB hard you have.

Their are two types of external USB Hard drives, powered and not powered. Powered means the external hard drive requires a power source. Not powered means the external hard drive is powered through the USB port on your PC / Laptop.

Installing these are relatively simple. But I do recommend that you use a Powered USB Hub for not powered hard drives so you are not using your PC's USB port power to power the external hard drive because for some PCs / Laptops it can damage the USB port by drawing to much power from the USB port.

Installing a Not powered external USB Hard Drive:

1. Install your USB Hub and connect power to it. (Cost of these is fairly cheap Around $30.00 depending on the make, model, and amount of ports in the HUB, plus the store you purchase it from.

2. Unpack the External drive

3. Plug one end of the USB chord to the USB Hub

4. Plug the other end (normally smaller) to the external Hard Drive (The plugs will only fit one way but just don't force them).

5. Give it a few seconds for windows to pick up the installation of the hard drive. You should see a window pop in the bottom right hand corner thats says installing new hardware.

6. Once that finishes and goes away, another window should pop up called Auto Play. It should give you a option called "Open folder to view files" once you see that you can click on it and view your newley installed not powered external USB Hard Drive.

7. If you do not see that screen wait a little longer as some pcs / laptops might take longer and some you might have to open my computer and look for a newly added drive letter.

For a powered external USB hard drive you do not require a USB Hub but if you are going to use one then

4. Plug the other end to the external Hard Drive (The plugs will only fit one way but just don't force them).

5. Plugin the power chord from the USB hard drive to an outlet.

6. Turn the power switch on.
